I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of

your letter 11868/1900 dated 24th instant with enclosures

for observations thereon.

2.

The necessity for an increase to the Marine

Staff since application was made in November 1899 has

been exemplified on two occasions between that date and

March last, Once when the mail steamer arrived at 7 a.m

and the sorting had only been completed one hour

previously, again when the one sorter went down got sick

and the mail was not sorted at all, causing disappoint-

ment and discontent to the public.

Government attached special attention being invited to

paragraphs 3, 4, and 6.
